Addressing Immigration Settlement in Southeast
Saskatchewan
The Southeast Community Settlement Committee
has been one of the initiatives of Community Futures Sunrise for
more than a year. The Southeast Community Settlement Committee
(SCSC) was initiated in June of 2007. The committee was formed
as a result of the increasing need for foreign workers to fill
the labour shortage in Southeast Saskatchewan.
The SCSC is made up of Federal Government, Provincial
Government and community partners with an interest in immigration
settlement. Committee members represent organizations across Southeast
Saskatchewan and provide our regional committee a community perspective.
Community Futures Sunrise has been a partner
of the initiative since its inception.
SCSC Vision
A region that accepts and embraces diversity, with communities
that recognize the value of immigration and newcomers who are
proud to call Southeast Saskatchewan their home.
SCSC Mission
To retain new immigrants and foster a sense of community, working
with community and Government partners in order to provide settlement
services across the Southeast.
Community Futures Sunrise's Role
CF Sunrise has contributed many hours towards the development
and growth of the SCSC. One of the strategic ends associated with
our organization is "Communities are assisted with Economic
Development". As many employers are now using immigration
as a method of fill job vacancies, Sunrise felt it was important
to be a part of the settlement process to "Help Make Southeast
Saskatchewan Their Home".
- Community Futures has taken on the role of
administrator for the project. This means that all grant applications
have been written by and submitted by Community Futures Sunrise.
As a result of these contributions, $99,199.00 has been secured
in funds from outside sources. All reports and follow-ups are
completed by CF staff. All accounting for the initiative is
also completed by Sunrise.
- In addition to that, CF Sunrise has contributed
$13,400 of operating dollars towards the initiative in cash
- CF Sunrise dedicates 4-6 hours per week towards
the SCSC initiative. This is a result of acting as the Chairperson
for the Committee and sitting on the SCSC Executive to deal
with the on-going daily issues that may arise from time-to-time.
This time is in addition to the cash value contributed above.
Sunrise also acts as the "employer" to the coordinator
acting as the direct supervisor to the individual in which they
follow all policies and procedures enforced by CF Sunrise.
- CF Sunrise attends a monthly meeting of
the SCSC to address issues that may be arising in communities,
amongst employers or newcomers themselves.
Overall, Sunrise plays a very active role in
the development of the SCSC and immigration settlement in our
region.
