Implementation of the Lake Diefenbaker Tourism
Destination Area Plan
The Lake Diefenbaker Tourism Destination Area
Plan (LDTDAP) was completed in July of 2008. The actual implementation
of the Plan began in September of 2008.
The Goal of the Tourism Plan was to identify
tourism issues and opportunities, and to recommend specific strategies
and actions to deal with them.
The overall objectives were:
- improve the quality of tourism products
- support business retention, expansion, and
development
- recommend strategies and actions to develop
the area as a competitive, investment ready, and marketable
tourism destination
- recommend strategies and actions to overcome
barriers to development and population growth
- provide a strategy for the implementation
of the Plan
The result is an action plan which shows how
these objectives can be achieved.
Twenty-eight tourism issues were identified
through committee discussions, public meetings, and consultations.
Strategies reflecting that input are provided, along with recommendations
and specific actions.
The tourism strategies have been divided
into seven categories:
- Infrastructure
- Attractions
- Hospitality
- Businesses/Services
- Promotion
- Population
- Plan Implementation
This last item - Plan Implementation - describes
a process including:
- Project Management and financial partnerships
- Monitoring and Evaluation
- Public Involvement
With respect to the Project Management and financial
partnerships, Tourism Saskatchewan, MidSask CF/ER, Whitecap Trail
Association, and Lake Diefenbaker Tourism Inc. are providing $360,000
in financial support to manage the implementation of this plan
over the next three years.
Specific actions required to deal with a number
of public sector responsibilities will require financial, administrative,
and procedural support by six provincial Ministries and a number
of municipal governments. The plan has been endorsed by 40 area
municipalities, Whitecap Dakota First Nation, and the West Central
and Southwest Saskatchewan Tourism Region Associations.
