Big Bad Wolf Seminar Series: Managing the risks of your new venture

This series will run on the following dates: October 21 & 28, November 4 & 18 from 7 - 9 p.m. Please note that the sessions listed below will not necessarily be held in that order. All sessions will be held in the SpringBoard West Innovations training room, 120 - 2 Research Drive in Regina and will be available via videoconferencing to other locations in Saskatchewan if there is enough interest. Cost is $50 per session or $175 for all four.

This 4 lecture series focuses on expanding the entrepreneurs' understanding of business risks. Sessions include:

 

Session 1: Intellectual Property - Making sure you can keep your cake

  • Patents, Copyright, Trademarks - do I need any of them?
  • Intellectual Property Strategy

 

Session 2: Personal Risk - Getting on the right path

  • The structure you choose for your company can affect your personal risk and your tax structure. Which one is right for you?
  • Why would I set up a corporation?
  • What's the best corporate structure for my tax bill?
  • Can I use tax credits to develop my new idea?

 

Session 3: People: Investors and Employees - To Grandmother's House We Go

People are the most important part of your company. Not just the people in it, but the advisors, supporters, and investors that are with you. How do you attract, and retain your team?

Who can invest in my company?

How do I communicate to my investors?

How do I select good people for my company?

What do I need to know to be a good employer?

 

Session 4: Supplier and Customer Relationships - Who's that knocking on my door?

  • Building relationships with customers and suppliers is essential. The contracts you put in place, both legal and social, are integral to ensuring you have a solid supply chain and returning customers.
  • Issuing Tenders and Request for Proposals (RFPs)
  • The deal: Important terms to discuss with your suppliers
  • Setting up international customer/ supplier relationships
  • Applicable laws
  • Customer Service
